15 December 2008 - The 12 Apostles

30th November

As we had a few cooking facilities we had scrambled eggs for breakfast, as we are going to Alice springs in a few days we need to finish up our food as it will go off just left in the van. We got into Port Campbell and stopped at the information centre before driving further along the great ocean road to “London bridge”, this is one of the rock formations in the sea, it was connected to the land but in 1990 it collapsed so now only half of it stands. We took some photo’s and moved on to the arch anther formation and took some more pics.

We drove back to Port Campbell and had some lunch in the fish and chip shop which was hugely disappointing, then we decided to find some where to stay for the night before going to see the 12 apostles. There was a campsite in just down the street from the fish and chip shop so we enquired on prices and decided to book ourselves so that later in the day we wouldn’t have to worry.

We drove to the 12 apostles, we were tempted to get a helicopter ride as someone had recommended it to us but we weren’t really too sure what to do. So we went down to the viewing platforms to see the Apostles from here first, again the apostle are huge sandstone boulders coming out of the sea. As we were there we could see the helicopters flying over and to be honest it didn’t look that impressive, we timed the flights too and they were only 5 mins so we decided to give it a miss and save the money for something else. Just down the road from the 12 apostles was a loch and gorge, so we drove there and did the 2hr walk to the gorge.

The flies on the way were atrocious, Sarah had about 40 on her back at one stage, but we continued going and did our best to ignore them!!! The scenery here was great so apart from the flies it was a lovely walk and the weather had held up making it a very pleasant day.

When we finished the walk we went back to the campsite for a supper of sandwiches and chocolate, they also had wireless internet free of charge so we were all able to catch up with things on the net.
