Yesterday we arrived in sydney after a sleepless night on a bus. We tried to get to our hostel, which was difficults aswe couldnt remember its name or where in the city it was, so we were off to a good start with sydney! had to take a train trip, and believe me that was difficult carrying five heavy bags each - I couldnt get through the barriers! When we came out of the station and felt very lost as we were not sure which way up the road we were meant to be going. following the directions of a local, we headed up the road, we had been walking a long way, and hadnt seen any of the marks that we were looking for on the map. another man helped us and said that we would come to it if we just kept walking. so we did. then finally, with all of the bags cutting into my arm so that I was losing feeling we decided that we should consult the map again as we were at a main road that was not on the map. Another couple of people came and had a look at the map, and told us that while we were still on victoria street, which was where we started and were meant to be, that we were at the wrong end.
I was not altogether too pleased, maybe because I was lacking both sleep and breakfast, so we ended up gettin a taxi back to where we started, and it turned out that the hostel was a five minute walk from where we had come out of the station! We had forgotted all about that when later that evening we were eating fish and chips outside the Sydney opera house, before going in to watch an opera we had decided to by tickets for that afternoon. We hadnt expected there to be any spaces when we asked, so were quite surprised when the lady offered us 2 types, the seated and the standing. We decided to be cheap and take the standing ones, as they were half the price, but when we got ther in the evening there were seated spaces so they upgraded us for free! We were the only people in there wearing flipflops though and felt like we should have been in the peasants seat, but we hadnt had time to go and change as it had been a last minute decision. It wasnt a problem, but nobody bothered to offer us canapes... slightly offended! Wish we had time to go back to the hostel at least to get a coat, as it was cold in the opera theatre!
We went out on monday night in bondi beach, would have been rubbish had we not been adopted by three canadian guys, I love the canadians, theyre great! and these three even bought us shots. was a good laugh, but Im not sure why byron has a nightlife rep, it had 2 bar me sized "clubs" and some pubs. oh well, we should be testing what sydney has to offer in the way of night life tomorrow, apparently tank is the place to be on a friday!
Also I accepted leeds and am trying to work out accomadation. I sent a lengthy email to my mum and dad with my thoughts and asking their opinion. apparently my mum is all advised out after having helped and supported my friend lauren with her uni decisions and the response I got was, "do what you think is best"... no Joke, that was all she said, not even "hello, hope you are well", or "love mum". Think Ive been replaced!
