My mate upgraded our BA flights to Brazil and we started the trip in style by flying world class and getting pissed on champagne in the lounge at Heathrow. Not sure this puts us in backpacker league but might as well go with the flow.
The taxi driver from the airport gave us a lesson in local dialects and basically wouldn´t shut the **** up all the way to the hostel. He was really friendly and we had to speak Spanish to him all the way. After 14 hours of travelling it was hard going but he did tell us we looked 23, so yeh we were happy.
Having dumped the bags we were in search of food and stopped at a place which was filled with locals. We chose some random Brazilian food and then just had to order ´fries in the fashion of the clipper way´, would be rude not to. I mean, what could that be. Not tellin ya - it is top secret!
The hostal we are staying at is lovely and is called Lemon Spirit, quite new on Leblon beach, we know the owner and managed to bag a dorm all to ourselves.
Claudia a local friend has shown us around at night and taken us to some cool places. Baxio Gavea for drinks and sitting down bar type places and restaurants. All locals and Lapa, ´Los Club Democraticas´ for some serious letting our hair down with some Capirinhas. Absolutely lethal!!!!
There was a live Samba band so tried out some moves from my Samba classes - failed miserably. Got the hang of it after about 5 hours of being thrown around by the locals. Can´t wait to tell my dance teacher.
Unfortunately i could´t get rid of Rogerio who reckoned he was a poet and has sent me links to his website already. Comical.
We went to a football match yesterday at the Maracena stadium to watch Vasco and Fluminese - we were in the Fluminese end and Vasco won. An amazing experience. They make so much more of the games than the English doo. Everyone gets a ballon, there is a performance with flags by the fans and they pass the flag over everyone´s head like a blanket and noone wears a top. Also found out after the game from a tour guide that what we were chanting in the game copying the locals ´toma en cu Vasco´, means ***you up the ar*e Vasco´ Nice!!!
Yesterday we also went up Sugar loaf mountain in a cable car. You take pictures of Christ from this point, really good views of the whole city and the weather was great so it was lovely.
Today will be spent nursing a hangover on the beach until the next time. x
