8th November
Sarah and I were up early after our first night on the road, Sarah hadn’t got much sleep due to the noisy main road just 25yards away from our camping spot! We had breakfast just as it stopped raining thankfully the sun came out and we ventured into Byron bay.
It was a quant town with a nice feel to it, out on the peninsular was a lighthouse from 1901, we drove up to the free car park just below and walked up the steep hill the rest of the way. It was well worth it as the views were outstanding. There was a 1km walk at the summit which lead us down a steep hill to the most easterly point of eastern Australia. There was a viewing platform that we stopped at on the way back to up, as we were admiring the view I spotted a pod of dolphins, there must have been at least 10-15 of them, it was lovely to watch them for a while, a few jumped out of the water into the surf so we managed to get a few pictures although they are from quite a distance!
We walked into town and stopped at a café Dan had a coffee whilst Sarah and I enjoyed a cold milkshake, afterwards we drove a little way outside of town for lunch at a nearby rest stop, where we were joined by a couple of geese, white ibis, a magpie and a rather pretty smaller bird. The rest stop was quite nice as it had a big lake with purple and yellow water lilies, it was certainly one of the nicer rest areas we have seen.
We drove on further south hoping to stop at a camp site outside coff’s harour, we stopped in Grafton to do some food shopping, it had been raining continuously since we had had lunch and were ready for a cup of tea. We drove on hoping to find a dry spot to make our tea when we saw a sign post for a rest stop and at a service station. We went inside to check it out only to find it had showers although we were supposed to stay at a campsite tonight we decided here would be just as good and even better it was free!!!
We parked up the van and were surrounded by a group of kangaroo’s feeding on the grass, we have had a great day for spotting wildlife today, Dan and I were pleased to have Sarah here with us to experience it!
As it had been raining most of the day Dan set up the tarpaulin for the first time since buying the van, to provide us with some shelter, it worked well but unfortunately there wasn’t much we could do about the hundreds of mosquitoes that flocked around us during dinner. In the end we had to cover up as we were getting eaten alive!!
