8 October 2008 - Fraser Island day 2

8th September

First light was at 5.30am so we all got up at 5.15am to watch sun rise at the Maheno wreck, amazingly Dan was up after the first alarm went off! We got to the wreck and took some photo’s, Dan’s battery went so he went back to the campsite to get a new one. By the time Dan got back the sun had already risen but between the 3 of us we had gotten some really nice photo’s. It was great to be there at this time as there were no cars driving by, no tourists and just the sound of the sea and the wind whistling past your ears.

We stayed a while then headed back to camp for some breakfast, there were dingo tracks all up the beach and lots of jelly fish.

After breakfast we set off, we had a lot of ground to cover today before the tide came in and because of this we would loose 6hrs driving time so we were hoping to get it all done by 2pm at the latest.

Along the beach were the pinnacles and red rock, both of these were hard sand formations, we stopped at these but only spent 5 mins at each as there wasn’t really that much to see.

Further up the beach was a lookout called Indian head, the views from the top were spectacular, both north and southern views of the beach . From this point it is also possible to spot sharks, whales and dolphins. We were lucky enough to spot a big pod (group) of dolphins, we sat and watched them for an hour or so then headed further up the beach to Champagne rocks.

Again this site was beautiful and we had heard about it from Anwar and Kate a couple we meet in Koh Samui (Thailand). Anwar had been taking pictures of the waves and got hit by a big one sending him flying, he split his chin open and lost a lot of the skin from his heels!! Needless to say after hearing that story we all stayed well away from the rocks and the waves!!

After an hour here we had to set off again back the way we came as the tide had already started to come in, we drove for about an hr and choose a camping spot so we could set up camp and spend the rest of the relaxing.

We had a great afternoon relaxing, watching the eagles, reading our books and enjoying each others company. Dan and john went for a walk as they were trying to get a good picture of the eagles whilst Rachel ad I sat and gossiped!!

After a while we were getting rather worried as the boys had been gone a long time, trouble was they had climbed over a huge hill so they were out of sight and neither of us fancied climbing through the long grass to the top just in case there were any snakes or spiders!! Thankfully they appeared a few minutes later, both Rachel and I were relieved as we wouldn’t have to go looking for them!!

We had brought the poi with us so I got it out and had a go, I managed to master the backwards single and double weave so I was pleased as I’d been trying for a while. Rachel and john both had a go of the poi and did really well, especially Rachel who mastered all the moves I can do in an afternoon, very impressive, it had just taken me 2 weeks to master the last moves!!

That evening we had a great chicken curry and enjoyed some more wine and chocolate, Rachel and I fell asleep the floor, we had laid down some tarpaulin and covered it with blankets and pillows to make ourselves somewhere comfy to sit, it was obviously a little too comfy!!
