23 April 2008 - The Temples at Ankgor

22nd April

We　got up at 4.45am and left the guest house by 5am. We had to go to the ticket office first. Tickets for the temples at Ankgor are $20 per person!! That was our budget blown before we had even eaten!! It was worth it though!!

We got to Ankor Wat at about 5.30am, although it is low season at the moment there was still hundreds of tourists. The sunrise was good but we didnt have elevated seating positions so we only saw some of it.

Ankgor was impressive, we spent around 2hrs there, as we were walking out we spotted some monekys playing on the edge of the jungle!! It was only 7.30am but we were already very hot so we headed to the next site.

Dan and i wondered why people only really reffer to Ankgor Wat as that is just one of the temples in the area. Although the temple itself is the biggest there is Ankgor Thom which houses a number of temples and our favorite, Bayon. This temple has over 200 faces peering down at you as you walk around and was built in 1200AD.

We also went to Ta Prohm which is mainly know for it's connection with the film Tombraider as some of the scenes were shot here. We liked this site as the jungle had taken over in some places and so trees were growing in the middle of the temples.

It got to about 11am, by this time we were all pretty tired and it was really hot. We decided to call it a day and go back to the hotel. Although the temples are great to see you could spend a week seeing them all and in this heat half a day was enough. We were templed out...a common saying amoung thoes travelling!! (I'm sure grandpa could happily spend more than a week here though!!)

After a rest and some lunch dan and i joined anna and lee for another afternoon at the pool...bliss.
